๐ Hello from sunny California,
It's been an incredibly busy few weeks!
When we last left off, I was begging for your votes on my Eurail story. (Sadly, I only came in third place. We tried!)
But so much has happened since:
Did you know that one of the original โRosie the Rivetersโ is 100 years young and lives in Wichita? We got to meet her at the Kansas Air Museum.
I bought the Amtrak USA Rail Pass (10 segments within 30 days for a fixed price) and used the first two segments to travel six hours by train from Milwaukee to Minneapolis, for a single lunch.
Attended TBEX Summit America in the Air Capital of the World (Wichita, Kansas!) though I arrived by train, of course. ;)
Happy to announce that I was accepted into the inaugural cohort of the News Creator Corps.
Got my first byline for Business Insider, my first piece about train travel!
In total, Iโll be adding more than 5800 miles to my total for the six month period by using the USA Rail Pass. โ
๐ Would YOU consider a USA Rail Pass to hop-on / hop-off across the country? What questions would you have about using one? โ
๐ Hit reply and let me know so I can answer them in my upcoming post about it!
Hot off the press ๐
My first piece for Business Insider has been in the works for a while, so the headline is already out of date. By the end of October, Iโll have covered more than 10,000 miles and 27 US states since coming back, all by train.

Destination Inspiration โ
โ๏ธ Starting October 12, the European Union has launched a new Entry/Exit System (EES), which means that most visitors from outside the EU will need to have their fingerprints and other biodata captured when entering for a short stay. Details here.
๐ Looking to unplug these days? Travel Charlee brings us trip blueprints for her recommended digital detox locations. (Iโm heading into the mountains in Yosemite this weekend to unplug!)
The Meal-a-Day Method shows you how to use one meal a day as your language practice anchor, with a short video and printable guides you can use on your next trip. Just $5 for newsletter readers.
Thereโs something about ink, paper, and faraway postmarks that feels like analog magic, don't you think? If youโd like a handwritten postcard from Hawaii, just reply with your mailing address and Iโll add you to my list. โจ๐

๐ Aloha friends, Whew, I made my deadline! Now Iโm taking a little time to visit friends and family and make my way to as many local spots as possible before itโs time to go back to the rails. Two "firsts" that have been on my Maui list for a while: First Friday in Wailuku and something people might be surprised to hearโฆ my first time trying the "World Famous Pancakes" at Tasty Crust! Tasty Crust is the kind of local diner where generations have gathered. My dad told us about going there...
๐ Aloha friends, If you joined me through the 2026 DIY Trip Summit, another warm welcome. I hope your trip planning is going well! After nearly three months in Japan, Iโve swapped plum blossoms and takoyaki for trade winds and poke back home in Hawaii. Iโll have my head down this week, putting the final touches on a guidebook update. Itโs not glamorous work, lots of fact checking phone calls, photos and on-the-ground research, but I'm grateful to be able to show visitors some of my hometown...
๐ธ Greetings from Osaka, The first blossoms are beginning to open against blue skies, such a contrast to the snow from only a week ago. This month Iโve been taking a food writing course, and there's one idea I keep returning to when the rest of the world feels too heavy to be writing about something like food or travel. Writing about food is rarely just about the food. It opens into culture, history, language, identity, power. It is a way to stay curious and connected. During Mahina สปลlelo...
