The View from the Rails 🚂

👋 Greetings from my next train adventure, a 13-hour day aboard the Amtrak Northeast Regional train from Richmond, Virginia to Boston, Massachusetts!

I've been rediscovering how much I love watching the scenery change out the window of a long-distance train and how much I love the people watching (and eavesdropping!) I can do from inside my roomy seat.

I’ll be spending the weekend in Boston and then it’s up to Canada next week, starting with Montreal for a few days before heading to Quebec City for the TBEX Conference.

Any tips or recommendations for what I should see, do, or (most importantly) EAT? Hit reply and let me know!

🚂 Next stop, Boston!

(As always, if you want to follow along, the highlights will be over on Instagram.)

Do you know any dishes, restaurants or food-related festivals near Amtrak, VIA Rail or Brightline stops that are worth traveling for?
Do you have questions about train travel? I'm working on some posts and freebies to help with that!
👉 Hit reply and let me know what's stopping you from traveling by train?

🚂 Amtrak Coast Starlight Southbound: Portland to LA

Well this isn’t new, but all the train travel I’ve been doing since touching down back in the USA one month ago has made me nostalgic.

Here’s a piece I wrote back in 2014 about the 30 hour journey from Portland to LA on the Amtrak Coast Starlight.

👋 Hi friends, Before leaving Istanbul, I was invited to join a very special food tour. Our guide Yumna introduced us to dishes from her unique perspective, along with other immigrant cuisines from Yemen, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. While our group was waiting in a local park, we were even spontaneously offered to share a plate from a picnic at the neighboring table! The area where the tour takes place is only a few tram stops from famous sightseeing spots like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue...

👋 Howdy from Milwaukee, Something you might not know about me: before I started my website, I was once a food tour guide in Honolulu! I got to spend each tour guiding hungry visitors around Honolulu, sharing the history of family-run businesses and snacks from my childhood. My official job title with Hawaii Food Tours was "Malasada Maven" We would eat our way around Chinatown while weaving in stories about local culture, history, and ingredients, ending up on a sweet note with malasadas at...

👋 A few musings from Milwaukee… People worried about my safety when I lived in Turkiye, considering it was led by an autocratic president, with hostile policies towards women’s rights, LGBTQ+, immigration, and the economy. Political opponents have been jailed and protests suppressed. The government controls the news so it's possible for a large portion of the population to be unaware of the severity… It's easy to see how quickly civil liberties can be eroded. But it’s also increasingly...
