From Istanbul Breakfasts to DC Adventures

πŸ‘‹ Greetings from somewhere south of DC!

Continuing along my East Coast USA train journey, I spent the past week in Washington, DC with Adrienne (@TheHaphazardTraveler). I hadn't been in DC since 2016 and as you can imagine, a LOT has changed since then!

One important stop was to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It had just opened when I was there last and the entry tickets were impossible to come by. It was a sobering reminder of dark times in our history (and patterns that sometimes repeat in the present) and I was happy that I was finally able to visit.

I also made use of the DC Metro system, walked along the Georgetown waterfront, rode the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere and caught up with friends over Vietnamese, Salvadorean and Japanese restaurants.

Then we ended the week with the excitement (!!) of a rare tornado warning in Maryland, but luckily it doesn't appear that any touched down.

Next stop, Virginia!

(As always, if you want to follow along, the highlights will be over on Instagram.)

Do you know any dishes, restaurants or food-related festivals near Amtrak, VIA Rail or Brightline stops that are worth traveling for?

The Best Spots for Turkish Breakfast in Istanbul

Before I left Istanbul, I went out for one last Turkish breakfast (serpme kahvalti) with Andrea of The Quirky Cork. To my surprise, it ended up being one of my all-time favorites!

Making a difference

My friend Sarah Hamdan's first novel came out this week, she's described it as "a layered story of love, hope and humor centered on Palestinian Americans.

In one of her posts on Instagram, Sarah says "I've had to balance my joy with heartbreak over the daily images coming out of Palestine this week - at it's core, my novel is about a displaced Palestinian family in the 1940s and the emotional aftermath that spills over decades later in NY... As I said in my NPR interview, literature has a quiet but powerful role to play in nurturing our shared sense of humanity, these days more than ever πŸ™"

πŸ‘‹ Hi friends, It’s been a rough week for news headlines hasn’t it? As the world becomes smaller and smaller and information travels more quickly, it's easier to feel connected to disasters unfolding in the news. What I've been trying to do when I am overwhelmed by the headlines, is to look for small pockets of joy to stay grounded, and also small ways that I can help from afar. Missing my favorite spot to find peace: riding the ferries on the Bosphorus One way to help ❀🩹 World Central Kitchen...

πŸ‘‹ Hello from Washington, DC! After a few days to reset and catch up at a friend's place in New Jersey, it was time for my next train, southbound once more. I could have departed from Moynihan Train Hall in NYC again, but instead I opted for Newark Penn Station to try something new. I loved looking up at the Art Deco details in the high ceilings, the floors and the information kiosk in the middle of the waiting room. Three globe chandeliers are suspended overhead, with the animals of the...

πŸ‘‹ Well, that was quite the journey! After nearly two months back in North America, I took my last planned train ride (for now!) to get from Buffalo back to New York City via Amtrak's Empire Service route which runs through most of the state. I was curious about the total mileage so I decided to add it up! In total over the past 2 months I've spent close to 68 hours on trains. The 10 segments totaled more than 3100 miles (5000 km) and took me through 2 countries, 11 US States + DC. I won't...
