Staying Safe, Staying Kind ❤‍🩹

👋 Hi friends,

It’s been a rough week for news headlines hasn’t it?

As the world becomes smaller and smaller and information travels more quickly, it's easier to feel connected to disasters unfolding in the news.

What I've been trying to do when I am overwhelmed by the headlines, is to look for small pockets of joy to stay grounded, and also small ways that I can help from afar.

One way to help ❤‍🩹

World Central Kitchen is on the ground supporting the rescuers in Camp Mystic and other central Texas communities impacted by the flooding of the Guadalupe River last week.

They also still have teams in war zones like Gaza and Ukraine, they are feeding those battling wildfires in Hatay and just deployed to assist in earthquake-impacted areas of Guatamala.

A small monthly donation to World Central Kitchen is just one way I try to support those out there in communities making a difference.

Wherever you are in the world reading this, I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and well. 🙏

What's YOUR best tip for finding a bit of joy in the world these days? Hit reply and let me know!

It may seem a long way off when you’re dealing with summer heat waves and counting fireflies, but my favorite season is just around the corner.

If you’re planning ahead for leaf peeping this autumn, you might consider Shenandoah Valley as an easy day trip from Washington DC.

😎 Hello from the edge of Sequoia, Earlier this week we celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which reminded me that I’d mentioned Owamni in last week’s email but never shared the details. The modern Indigenous restaurant in Minneapolis, founded by Chef Sean Sherman, ended up being one of the most memorable meals of my travels. My Instagram post (also on Facebook) about the experience seems to have struck a chord with people and has more than 32,000 views to date since the chef shared it too! If...

😎 Hello from sunny California, It's been an incredibly busy few weeks! When we last left off, I was begging for your votes on my Eurail story. (Sadly, I only came in third place. We tried!) But so much has happened since: Did you know that one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” is 100 years young and lives in Wichita? We got to meet her at the Kansas Air Museum. I bought the Amtrak USA Rail Pass (10 segments within 30 days for a fixed price) and used the first two segments to travel six...

👋 Hi friends, A couple of weeks ago I shared my Matador Network piece on Buffalo from this summer and I'm still getting caught up on sharing the behind-the-scenes from the trip. I've got up a new Instagram post today with some of the food highlights, and later I’ll be sharing more about where I stayed, the makers I met, and how Buffalo is marking the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal this week! With National Sponge Candy Day coming up this Sunday and the Bills off to a winning start, it...
