πŸ—ΊπŸ“Mapping Your Next Adventure

Happy Aloha Friday!

Welcome to this week's roundup of tasty tidbits specially curated for you from Hawaii to Istanbul and everywhere in between...

πŸ‘‹ Hi Reader,

This week I've got an exciting collaboration with Michelle at Intentional Travelers as she gears up for the relaunch of her Google Maps Travel Hacks course, a step-by-step system to help you travel with confidence.

You may know that I'm also a huge Google Maps fan since it's part of my own strategy to avoid tourist trap restaurants when I travel. I love how Michelle's course fills in additional ways to make the most of your maps especially with driving, since I'm usually focused just on the food πŸ˜‹ and not thinking about navigation.

There will be an exclusive early bird discount available when the relaunch opens next week, including a chance to win your own custom Google Map made by yours truly ($59 value) and some other great bonuses. I'll send a quick reminder about it when the relaunch opens, with all the details.

Language Resources for Travelers

I enjoy learning about other languages through recipes and cookbooks both before and after a trip. For me, food is the easiest way to connect with locals when I travel. Which language are you studying?

Destination Inspiration ✈

  • Anyone else hooked on Severance? 🫣 If you're missing the show now that the season is over, Moon Guides has a list of 6 filming locations in the Hudson Valley, the Catskills and Newfoundland that you might recognize. (Feel free to reply and tell me what you thought of the finale!)
  • Emily Lush shares her latest guide for Western Georgia, all about the 'Monument Route' – the drive from Kutaisi to Zugdidi and all the wonderful mosaics, memorials, monuments and monasteries you can see along the way. Her guides are so helpful and her photos are always stunning. If you’ve never been to Georgia (the country) you will absolutely want to after this.
  • For Italian food lovers, Chicca's Cooking Club is having a FREE Flour Gnocchi Class next Saturday, April 5th. The live masterclass will be held 10:30am PT / 1:30pm ET / 7:30pm Italy from Bolgheri, Tuscany. I missed the last one (on tiramisu!) and watched the replay - it was so inspiring to see this group of home cooks going through the recipe together. Highly recommended!

Make a difference β˜€

  • Earlier today there was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, causing buildings to collapse and sadly many reports of deaths and injuries. As usual, World Central Kitchen has mobilized to partner with chefs and organizations on the ground to provide nutritious meals and comfort to the survivors and first responders. Read more about their emergency response and consider a donation to help support their efforts worldwide. (They are also currently mobilizing for the flooding in South Texas and mourning a volunteer killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.)

πŸ‘‹ Hi friends, It’s been a rough week for news headlines hasn’t it? As the world becomes smaller and smaller and information travels more quickly, it's easier to feel connected to disasters unfolding in the news. What I've been trying to do when I am overwhelmed by the headlines, is to look for small pockets of joy to stay grounded, and also small ways that I can help from afar. Missing my favorite spot to find peace: riding the ferries on the Bosphorus One way to help ❀🩹 World Central Kitchen...

πŸ‘‹ Hello from Washington, DC! After a few days to reset and catch up at a friend's place in New Jersey, it was time for my next train, southbound once more. I could have departed from Moynihan Train Hall in NYC again, but instead I opted for Newark Penn Station to try something new. I loved looking up at the Art Deco details in the high ceilings, the floors and the information kiosk in the middle of the waiting room. Three globe chandeliers are suspended overhead, with the animals of the...

πŸ‘‹ Well, that was quite the journey! After nearly two months back in North America, I took my last planned train ride (for now!) to get from Buffalo back to New York City via Amtrak's Empire Service route which runs through most of the state. I was curious about the total mileage so I decided to add it up! In total over the past 2 months I've spent close to 68 hours on trains. The 10 segments totaled more than 3100 miles (5000 km) and took me through 2 countries, 11 US States + DC. I won't...
