๐Ÿœ The trade-off that lets me eat well anywhere

๐Ÿ‘‹ Greetings from Tokyo!

It feels like conversations about cost of living are everywhere right now. Housing is more expensive, travel feels harder to justify, and a lot of people are rethinking whatโ€™s actually sustainable.

Ten years ago, I shared country-specific cost breakdowns during a long-term trip in order to be transparent about what life on the road actually cost me compared to staying in Hawaii. Iโ€™ve been getting similar questions again lately, so this time around Iโ€™ve been keeping notes too.
โ€‹
Hereโ€™s the short version from the first couple of weeks of this trip. Right now, my day-to-day costs in Tokyo look roughly like this:

  • Housing + food: about $60/day
  • Monthly estimate: around $1,850โ€“1,900

Itโ€™s not cheap, but it is a reminder that there are still ways to make expensive cities work if youโ€™re intentional about where you spend and where you save. For me, thatโ€™s meant capsule hotels, simple meals and public transport, with a few splurges mixed in here and there!

Iโ€™ve also been easing into the language and culture through food, of course, including on another fantastic tour with Culinary Backstreets. I came away with four new food-loving friends and a soft spot for the small businesses of the Mozen Nakacho neighborhood.

I hope that no matter where you are in the world, you and your loved ones are safe and warm.

Happy holidays,

๐Ÿ‘‰ How will you be celebrating the holidays this year? Do you have any special traditions or dishes that will be on the menu?

๐Ÿ›Œ Capsule hotels around the world

โ€‹
In cities where hotels might be pricey, I keep my lodging simple so that I can splurge on food. (Priorities! ๐Ÿ˜‹) Capsule hotels have been one of the easiest ways to make that trade-off work. Would you stay in one?

The sign outside of Tasty Crust in Wailuku Maui, reads "Tasty Crust" World Famous Pancakes" above a red and white Coca-Cola logo. The local diner is visible with its parking lot to the left, a Wailuku road to the right and blue skies above.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Aloha friends, Whew, I made my deadline! Now Iโ€™m taking a little time to visit friends and family and make my way to as many local spots as possible before itโ€™s time to go back to the rails. Two "firsts" that have been on my Maui list for a while: First Friday in Wailuku and something people might be surprised to hearโ€ฆ my first time trying the "World Famous Pancakes" at Tasty Crust! Tasty Crust is the kind of local diner where generations have gathered. My dad told us about going there...

๐Ÿ‘‹ Aloha friends, If you joined me through the 2026 DIY Trip Summit, another warm welcome. I hope your trip planning is going well! After nearly three months in Japan, Iโ€™ve swapped plum blossoms and takoyaki for trade winds and poke back home in Hawaii. Iโ€™ll have my head down this week, putting the final touches on a guidebook update. Itโ€™s not glamorous work, lots of fact checking phone calls, photos and on-the-ground research, but I'm grateful to be able to show visitors some of my hometown...

๐ŸŒธ Greetings from Osaka, The first blossoms are beginning to open against blue skies, such a contrast to the snow from only a week ago. This month Iโ€™ve been taking a food writing course, and there's one idea I keep returning to when the rest of the world feels too heavy to be writing about something like food or travel. Writing about food is rarely just about the food. It opens into culture, history, language, identity, power. It is a way to stay curious and connected. During Mahina สปลŒlelo...
