The tour trend I’ve been unexpectedly loving lately 🎧

👋 Aloha from sunny Florida,

A year ago, I was here with my brother to visit our mom for Mother’s Day and now one year later, I’ve come full circle!

Since I had another rail pass, I also added a stop in Savannah, Georgia to meet up with a dear friend from Hawaii. The only trouble was that the timing. I arrived in the middle of the night and departed at 4am the next night!

Still, we made the most of my 24-hour stop with a fantastic food tour that featured southern favorites like fried green tomatoes, boiled peanuts and biscuits & gravy while wandering through Savannah’s shady historic squares.

Our guide, Country, was hilarious, full of nuggets of southern wisdom (and restaurant recommendations too).

Highly recommended if you're ever passing through Savannah! I've also started bookmarking my favorite food tours in the US that I've taken, and this one definitely made the list.

A free walking tour?!

Food tours are still my favorite, but lately I’ve also been testing VoiceMap's self-guided audio walking tours. I took one in Holland, Michigan and another in Chicago’s Loop and was surprised by how detailed they were! They’re created by local storytellers, guides, and historians and let you explore at your own pace.

👋 Aloha from DC, Three years ago tomorrow, fires devastated Lahaina and parts of Upcountry Maui. For me, the most meaningful way to mark the day is not just to remember what happened, but to keep paying attention to the people and organizations doing the long work of recovery. If you're on Maui, you can volunteer on a community workday with Mālama Kula or take part in Lights for Lahaina rememberance. Kalamata Open Market in Messinia, Greece with fresh produce and local vendors

👋 Aloha from DC, This week I finally made it to see The Odyssey. I was looking forward to seeing it, true. But also, three hours of air conditioning in a reclining seat with a giant tub of popcorn? Yes, please! 🙋🏻♀🍿 I still haven't decided what I thought of the film itself, but the scenery took me right back to Greece. They were filming in Messinia while I was staying in Kalamata, so there was plenty of buzz about Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway being spotted around the region. (Sadly, I wasn't...

👋 Aloha from DC! It's been a fun few weeks around here. I took the train to Richmond for the TBEX conference, where I caught up with friends I only get to see once a year and came back with a notebook full of story ideas. In other news, you might remember that earlier this year I was a guest on the Travel the World Confidently podcast. They invited me back, this time to talk all things train travel.
