Countdown to New Beginnings 😢

Happy Aloha Friday!

Welcome to this week's roundup of tasty tidbits specially curated for you from Hawaii to Istanbul and everywhere in between...

👋 Hi friend,

Big changes are brewing around here, and the countdown is on...

No, it's not an April Fool's joke. I'm actually leaving Istanbul soon!

I recently heard someone mention the idea of “soulmate cities,” and if I had to pick mine, it would be Istanbul.

Even with the multitude of changes — some good, some bad — in both myself and my soulmate over the past decade, it’s still a place that has somehow always felt like home. Through health scares and then a worldwide pandemic, my apartment became my little oasis of comfort in a chaotic world. I’ll always be grateful for that.

This week, I started downsizing, selling or giving away the things I’ve accumulated over the years. I’m pretty minimalist, but every time I move, I ask myself: how (and why and when) did I end up with so much stuff? In a way, it feels freeing to let it all go — to pass on things I once treasured to those who could use them.

I first arrived in Istanbul on May 4, 2015, so today marks exactly nine years and eleven months since that day. Soon after I round out the decade, I’ll be heading back to the U.S. for a bit. For now, it’s a one-way ticket, but we’ll see.

When I was getting ready to leave Honolulu, I made a "bucket list" of things I'd wanted to do there but never got around to... It was fun checking things off the list with friends who wanted to join in, like going around the entire island by public bus, a sunrise hike at Makapuu, the omakase menu at Sushi Sasabune and having lunch on the grounds of I'olani Palace.

Perhaps I'll have to start one soon for my beloved Istanbul as well. Have you ever made a bucket list before leaving someplace that felt like home?

Where to Stay in Kalamata

Both times I’ve been to Kalamata, I stayed near the seaside. (Can you blame me? How gorgeous is this shot looking out at the Messinian Gulf from the Pharae Palace Hotel’s rooftop?) But next time, I'm thinking that I might give the Old Town area a try.

👋 Hi friends, It’s been a rough week for news headlines hasn’t it? As the world becomes smaller and smaller and information travels more quickly, it's easier to feel connected to disasters unfolding in the news. What I've been trying to do when I am overwhelmed by the headlines, is to look for small pockets of joy to stay grounded, and also small ways that I can help from afar. Missing my favorite spot to find peace: riding the ferries on the Bosphorus One way to help ❤🩹 World Central Kitchen...

👋 Hello from Washington, DC! After a few days to reset and catch up at a friend's place in New Jersey, it was time for my next train, southbound once more. I could have departed from Moynihan Train Hall in NYC again, but instead I opted for Newark Penn Station to try something new. I loved looking up at the Art Deco details in the high ceilings, the floors and the information kiosk in the middle of the waiting room. Three globe chandeliers are suspended overhead, with the animals of the...

👋 Well, that was quite the journey! After nearly two months back in North America, I took my last planned train ride (for now!) to get from Buffalo back to New York City via Amtrak's Empire Service route which runs through most of the state. I was curious about the total mileage so I decided to add it up! In total over the past 2 months I've spent close to 68 hours on trains. The 10 segments totaled more than 3100 miles (5000 km) and took me through 2 countries, 11 US States + DC. I won't...
