🗽 A free NYC souvenir you can actually use
Published 1 day ago • 5 min read
👋 Aloha from the Big Apple,
My first stop from the train station was one of my true happy places, the Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library.
Lately I've been trying to make a library stop everywhere I travel. I love seeing how libraries serve their communities and, of course, finding out whether visitors can get a card!
The Rose Reading Room at the Stephan A Schwartzman Building of the NY Public Library
Just register online and you'll get a temporary card, then you have 30 days to exchange it for a physical card at any branch of the New York Public Library system.
There was a particularly moving connection between Lahaina after the 2023 fires and New York 25 years after 9/11, with people involved in preserving the stories and memories of both communities sharing what they've learned. And with local food, music and familiar faces from Maui mixed in, I felt right at home.
Saturday morning I met up with my dear friend Karlee and her daughter Aspen for a photo shoot with NYC Photo Journeys, run by my friend Jessie Festa. We got some gorgeous photos from classic NYC locations... and we also had one very enthusiastic photobomber. (see below) 😂
Can't believe I caught him in midair!
More on the photo shoot next week, including a few of our favorite photos and why I think it's such a fun way to experience NYC. ✨Until next time,

Coming home through language
I joined Lindsay Does Languages podcast recently to talk about picking up ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi as an adult away from Hawaii, learning Turkish through food, and why language has become such an important part of how I travel.

I loved this look at the return of analog travel in the Seattle Times, from film cameras to paper maps.
I loved this Westword piece by Laura Young, who spent 12 hours in a Denver diner. It made me think about nostalgic spots like this back home. Is there one in your hometown? 👉 Hit reply and let me know!

👋 Aloha from DC, Friday took me somewhere you definitely wouldn't have expected me to turn up on my own: the PB Dye Golf Club in Maryland. ⛳ My childhood friend Krislyn asked if I was available to help out at the Capstone Classic, a fundraiser for CitySwing Foundation and its youth programs. Another Maui classmate of ours was there too, and I somehow even came home with kūlolo, which I haven't had in ages!Apparently that put me in a Hawaii food mood, because the next day I used up some tofu...
👋 Aloha from DC, It’s still warm and humid here, but every once in a while you can feel something changing. The air feels a tiny bit lighter especially mornings, and it’s getting me excited for my favorite time of year... From one of two back to back road trips to Shenandoah Valley back in 2016 I’m planning to use most of my next Amtrak USA Rail Pass in September and October chasing fall foliage, including a few days aboard a schooner in Maine! If you have recommendations for New York, DC,...
👋 Aloha from DC, Three years ago tomorrow, fires devastated Lahaina and parts of Upcountry Maui. For me, the most meaningful way to mark the day is not just to remember what happened, but to keep paying attention to the people and organizations doing the long work of recovery. If you're on Maui, you can volunteer on a community workday with Mālama Kula or take part in Lights for Lahaina rememberance. Elsewhere, you can donate, support trusted Maui organizations, or read and share stories from...
