⛳ How did I end up here?

👋 Aloha from DC,

Friday took me somewhere you definitely wouldn't have expected me to turn up on my own: the PB Dye Golf Club in Maryland. ⛳

My childhood friend Krislyn asked if I was available to help out at the Capstone Classic, a fundraiser for CitySwing Foundation and its youth programs. Another Maui classmate of ours was there too, and I somehow even came home with kūlolo, which I haven't had in ages!

Apparently that put me in a Hawaii food mood, because the next day I used up some tofu with a pack of poke mix. I love these little packets because they come with dried ogo, Hawaiian salt, and chili pepper, and I usually keep a few on hand for cooking or omiyage when I travel.

It was one of those funny reminders that even when you’re far from home, your worlds have a way of overlapping.

✨ Until next time,

👋 Aloha from DC, It’s still warm and humid here, but every once in a while you can feel something changing. The air feels a tiny bit lighter especially mornings, and it’s getting me excited for my favorite time of year... From one of two back to back road trips to Shenandoah Valley back in 2016 I’m planning to use most of my next Amtrak USA Rail Pass in September and October chasing fall foliage, including a few days aboard a schooner in Maine! If you have recommendations for New York, DC,...

August 8 is National Spam Musubi day, this image is a plate of spam musubi with a spam can and three halves of musubis in the back

👋 Aloha from DC, Three years ago tomorrow, fires devastated Lahaina and parts of Upcountry Maui. For me, the most meaningful way to mark the day is not just to remember what happened, but to keep paying attention to the people and organizations doing the long work of recovery. If you're on Maui, you can volunteer on a community workday with Mālama Kula or take part in Lights for Lahaina rememberance. Elsewhere, you can donate, support trusted Maui organizations, or read and share stories from...

Kalamata Open Market in Messinia, Greece with fresh produce and local vendors

👋 Aloha from DC, This week I finally made it to see The Odyssey. I was looking forward to seeing it, true. But also, three hours of air conditioning in a reclining seat with a giant tub of popcorn? Yes, please! 🙋🏻♀🍿 I still haven't decided what I thought of the film itself, but the scenery took me right back to Greece. They were filming in Messinia while I was staying in Kalamata, so there was plenty of buzz about Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway being spotted around the region. (Sadly, I wasn't...
